Appliances, Voltage, and Plugs: What to Take and What to Leave, by Country

There is one decision people take far too lightly in international moves: which appliances to bring. They take up a lot of volume, and volume gets paid for. And if they do not work on arrival, you paid international freight for an object headed to the curb.
The confusion comes from believing an adapter solves everything. It does not. Three separate things are in play, and the adapter fixes only one of them.
1. Three different problems: plug, voltage, and frequency
The plug is the shape. It is the most visible problem and the least serious. A plug adapter solves the geometry: it lets the device fit into the wall. It changes nothing electrical.
Voltage is the pressure. Panama runs on 110V. Much of continental Europe runs on 220-240V. Plugging a 110V device into a 230V outlet without a transformer is not a theoretical risk: it destroys the equipment, almost always instantly and often with smoke. A step-down transformer does solve voltage, but it comes with its own cost, weight, and power limit.
Frequency is the rhythm. Panama runs at 60 Hz; Europe at 50 Hz. This is the point almost nobody considers and the one nothing fixes. No adapter and no conventional transformer changes the frequency of the supply.
2. The practical map: Panama versus Europe
The concrete data, verifiable in any technical source:
- Panama: 110V, 60 Hz, type A plugs (two flat pins) and type B (two flat pins plus a round ground). The same standard as the United States.
- Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, and much of continental Europe: 220-240V, 50 Hz, type C plugs (two round pins) and type F (two round pins with side ground contacts, the so-called “Schuko”).
- United Kingdom: 230V, 50 Hz, but with a type G plug, three rectangular pins with a built-in fuse. Different from the rest of Europe: a continental adapter will not help you.
- Italy also uses type L, three round pins in a line, alongside C and F.
In other words: between Panama and Europe, all three things change at once. Shape, pressure, and rhythm.

3. What actually happens to a motor at 50 Hz
Here is the technical heart of the matter. In an induction motor, rotation speed is determined by the supply frequency. Fed 50 Hz, a motor designed for 60 Hz turns roughly a sixth slower. It does not burn out immediately; it just works badly.
The consequences, appliance by appliance:
- Washers and dryers: the drum turns slower, and the programmed cycles and spin times no longer correspond to the actual rotation. They wash worse and spin worse.
- Refrigerators and air conditioners: the compressor performs below spec. The unit runs more hours to reach temperature, consumes more, and wears out sooner.
- Blenders, mixers, fans, pumps: fewer revolutions, less useful power.
- Microwaves: the magnetron and timer are frequency-sensitive; effective heating is altered.
- Motors with mechanical timers: clocks and program timers run slow cumulatively, because they count supply cycles.
And a warning about the reverse direction: a 50 Hz motor fed 60 Hz turns faster than designed, under greater mechanical stress. That is not a harmless swap either.
4. The decision rule, by appliance family
Apply it before packing anything.
Large appliances: almost always stay
Refrigerator, washer, dryer, electric range, dishwasher. They are bulky — they pay a lot of freight — heavy, dependent on motors and compressors, and available at destination in any store, adapted to the local supply and with a warranty valid there. Unless the unit is exceptional or very recent, the arithmetic almost never favors it.
There is one real exception: appliances that are already multi-voltage or universal range from the factory and also tolerate both frequencies. It is stated on the appliance’s rating plate. Read it before deciding.
Modern electronics: almost always come
Laptops, phones, tablets, cameras, consoles, routers, monitors. Most use switching power supplies that accept a wide input range and both frequencies.
Check it yourself. On the power supply or charger, look for a line like INPUT: 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz. If it says that, the device works in Europe and needs only a plug adapter. If it says just 120V 60Hz, it needs a transformer or it stays.
Audio, tools, and small motorized devices
Vintage amplifiers, turntables, drills, compressors, saws. These tend to be single-voltage and frequency-sensitive. If the item has sentimental or professional value, assess it case by case; if it is replaceable, replace it.
Devices that only generate heat
Irons, toasters, kettles, space heaters. Frequency does not affect them, but voltage does, and they draw a lot of power. A transformer able to run them is large, expensive, and heavy. Not worth it.
5. About transformers: what to know before buying one
If you decide to bring a 110V appliance, choose the transformer carefully:
- Size it by real power draw, with margin. The appliance’s wattage is on its rating plate. A transformer at its limit heats up and fails.
- Account for the startup surge. Motors draw several times their rated power at the instant they start. A transformer adequate in steady state may not start the equipment.
- Remember it does not convert frequency. The 50 Hz problem is still there, untouched.
- Add it to the budget and the volume. High-power transformers are heavy and take up container space.
6. How to prepare the ones that do travel
A badly prepared appliance arrives damaged no matter how good the freight was:
- Refrigerator: unplug and defrost at least 24 hours in advance, dry the interior completely, and leave the door ajar until loading. Moisture sealed in a container for weeks is guaranteed mold.
- Washer: drain hoses and drum, and fit the transit bolts that immobilize the drum if you still have them. Without them, the drum hits the casing with every movement of the ship.
- Cables and accessories: each with its own appliance, in a labeled bag.
- Valuable electronics: the original box where it exists; otherwise, custom packing with antistatic protection and corner guards.
- Declare them on the inventory at their real value. Do not inflate the value to “be extra safe”: you pay an unnecessary premium. Do not understate it to save: if something happens, the settlement will not cover replacing it.
In short
Between Panama and Europe, the plug, the voltage, and the frequency all change: 110V/60Hz with type A and B here, 220-240V/50Hz with type C and F there, and type G in the UK. An adapter only fixes the shape; a transformer fixes the voltage; nothing fixes the frequency. That is why motor-driven large appliances rarely justify the freight, and modern electronics with a 100-240V, 50/60Hz supply almost always do.
